The Houston Texans and the New England Patriots are reportedly brewing a blockbuster trade, one involving Ryan Mallett and the Texans' second round pick, a source close to situation reported last week.
In the wake of Bill O'Brien's hiring as the new Texans head coach, the ball club's front office appears to be determined to get him the kind of quarterback that fits his system.
According to NFL insider Gil Brandt, the Texans are reportedly trying to pull off a trade with the Patriots, as they look to send their second round pick for upcoming 2014 NFL Entry Draft to the Pats for the 6"6' pocket passer Mallett.
"O'Brien likes big QBs. I could see #Texans trying to trade w #Patriots for Mallett, going diff direction in draft," NFL Insider Gil Brandt posted on his Twitter account.
O'Brien, who worked with the Patriots at the time Mallett was selected in the third round of the 2011 NFL Entry Draft, wanted to have a big signal-caller orchestrating his offense, and Mallett could suit his plans well.
"The 6-6 Mallett has yet to appear in a regular season for the New England Patriots who drafted him out of Arkansas in the third round in 2011. O'Brien was on the Patriots staff when Mallett was drafted and even though he left for the Penn State job shortly thereafter, he is familiar with the big pocket passer," wrote Patrick Schmidt of Sports Illustrated Fan Sided.
Though Mallett has yet to appear in a single regular season game for the Pats, many football analysts believe the youngster can make a difference for the Texans, if given enough action on the field.
"Adding a player with pro experience to a veteran team could expedite the Texans rebuilding effort and get back into the postseason," said Patrick Schmidt of Fan Sided.
Sources indicated the Texans plan to use their first overall pick for a defensive player like South Carolina Gamecocks star linebacker Jadeveon Clowney. There are also the possibilities for the Texans to trade their top pick and get more picks in the first round.
However despite the rumors, NFL analysts predicted Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel will go No.1 on the draft board a few months from now.
"Celebrity aside, Kiper said Wednesday on SportsCenter that after talking to a sampling of "NFL people," the consensus is that Manziel is the best quarterback in this year's draft, with UCF's Blake Bortles and Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater rounding out the top 3," via USA Today.
