Nokia embarked on a new "unique experiment" featuring the Lumia 1020 Windows Phone 8 smartphone, utlizing 30 cities for the journey.

Nokia released a video of the experiment aimed at going beyond "social photography."

"In 30 cities around the world Nokia Lumia 1020s are being passed from hand to hand," says Nokia of the video. "Selected people like you are capturing their story of their city and sharing it with a global audience. We don't know who will end up with one, but we're definitely going to see some interesting stuff. Some of it might just be yours."

The video features one man's day, which was recorded by the Lumia 1020. From drinking coffee, riding a bike, and trekking around a city, the Lumia 1020 recorded or photographed the man's activities as he described the pros and cons along the journey.

Nokia's "#PassItOn" experiment noted 30 cities from across the globe including Almaty, Brussels, Delhi, Dusseldorf, London, Madrid, Milan, Mexico City, New York, and Sydney, to name a few.

According to Nokia, the experiment will begin on Jan. 20. Nokia sent Lumia 1020 smartphones to 30 cities on six continents. The Lumia 1020 smartphone handler is responsible of taking 10 photos of what's unique about their city. The Windows Phone 8 device must then be handed to another nine people while continuing to repeat the photography cycle. Nokia stated they don't know who will receive the Lumia 1020 next.

The Lumia 1020's features include a 4.5-inch screen with 1,280x768 pixels covered in Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The new Windows Phone 8 device has 32GB of internal storage for 2GB of RAM. The device includes a rear-facing camera with a 41-megapixel sensor and front-facing camera with 1.2 megapixels. The smartphone also packs a 2,000mAh battery.

In the U.S., the Lumia 1020 is an exclusive smartphone with mobile carrier AT&T. The smartphone can be bought for $199.99 when signing a two-year contract.
