Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu has won for the second consecutive time at this year's Director's Guild of America Awards for his work on "The Revenant."

This is the first back-to-back win in the award giving body's feature film category, Entertainment Weekly wrote. The Mexican director first bagged the award for "Birdman," which also won Best Picture at the 2015 Academy Awards.

The filmmaker's DGAs win is expected to have a significant impact on this year's Oscars nominations, the news outlet reported. The Producers Guild Awards naming "The Big Short" as its Best Picture, "Spotlight" bagging the top honor at the Screen Actors Guild, and Iñárritu's recent win at the DGAs all mark the first time since 2005 that the American major unions gave their highest awards to three different movies.

Entertainment Weekly noted that the winners of the DGA's feature film prize have also gone on to win the Oscars' Best Director honor nine times in the last 10 years. That means that "The Revenant," which starred Leonardo DiCaprio, has a huge chance in winning the top prize at the Oscars.

The DGAs didn't experience the same controversial season as the Oscars, which was criticized for its lack of diversity in its nominees. In his opening remarks, DGA President Paris Barclay said that the Guild's mission statement is to continue "the hard fight to convince the industry that 'equal opportunity' means just that... a chance for all of us to shine, no matter what we look like, what gender we are, and who we love," Entertainment Weekly further reported.

As for television, the DGAs gave top honors to HBO for Directorial Achievement in a Drama, a Comedy, and for a TV Movie/Miniseries, for the season finales of "Game of Thrones" and "Veep," and the biopic "Bessie," respectively.
