Witty Aaron Sorkin dramedy "The Newsroom" will return to HBO for one last season.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO has renewed the show for its third and final season, which will air this upcoming fall.

The news comes six months after HBO programming president Michael Lomardo said he would be "shocked" if the series did not return for another season. The news was not officially announced until now because show creator Aaron Sorkin had to write the Steve Jobs film script before getting back to "The Newsroom."

Paul Lieberstein, a former showrunner and actor on "The Office," will come aboard as an executive producer next season along with Alan Poul and Scott Rudin. Production will begin this spring.

The series, which chronicles the behind-the-scenes drama of ACN, a cable news show, will follow the real-life events that occurred in 2012 and 2013. Among the events it will cover will be the Newtown School shooting, which occurred in December 2012, and the Boston Marathon massacre in April 2013.

The series' second season, which aired July 14, ended with a two-part episode that took place on election night 2012.

While the series, which stars Jeff Daniels as newsman Will McAvoy, received media criticism when it debuted in the summer of 2012, it has pulled in decent ratings, as well as an Emmy win for Daniels.

The show has attracted an elite viewership with its high-brow conversations and political content. Some fans of the show include real newsmen Dan Rather and Brian Williams.

Lombardo previously said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the show "felt like the show was hitting a smart, adult audience that many of our dramas weren't." He added, "For a thinking audience, it's appointment viewing."

"The Newsroom" will come to an end along with two other popular HBO dramas, "True Blood" and "Boardwalk Empire."
