Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will make his return to the ring when he collides with Alfredo Angulo in a fight that could take place on March 8 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Boxing analysts believe that Alvarez selected Angulo for his next fight to have a better chance of scoring an impressive victory that would erase the memory of his recent lopsided loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September.
But while experts believe that his next fight will be some sort of a tune-up bout, Alvarez stressed that Angulo is no pushover, saying that he is expecting a tough fight against the 31-year-old Mexican.
"Angulo is a strong fighter, he has a heavy punch. We have seen him withstand a lot, always coming forward and he wears down his opponents. He has good stamina. He is very dangerous, you have to prepare very well because this is a very tough fight," Alvarez said in a BoxingScene interview.
Alvarez, who was previously unbeaten in 43 fights before his blockbuster showdown with Mayweather, also hit back at his critics, who are expressing doubts about his abilities after getting manhandled by the reigning pound-for-pound king.
"For me that was not a loss (against Floyd), that was something that taught me to keep winning and obviously hits the pride at home," Alvarez said. "I never wanted to lose, but that's boxing and as I've said I'm young, I took it as a lesson and I have to keep winning. Criticism will always exist, because when you succeed it always comes hand in hand, so it was not a defeat, it was a great experience."
The Mayweather bout was certainly a big financial boon for the 23-year-old Mexican boxer, as it gave Alvarez the biggest paycheck of his professional boxing career, at least $12 million from the record-breaking showdown.
The Mayweather-Canelo bout generated the second-most pay-per-view buys in history at $2.2 million subscriptions, while also setting the all-time domestic PPV revenue at $150 million.
With his previous pay-per-view record, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is expecting another blockbuster despite criticism about their decision to fight Angulo, who is coming off a tenth-round technical knockout loss to Erislandy Lara in June last year.
"Canelo is a huge star, so going on pay-per-view was not an issue. Canelo is a huge star, so going on pay-per-view was not an issue," Schaefer told ESPN.
