Amir Khan confirmed this week that he wants to fight whoever grabs the vacant World Boxing Council welterweight title this Saturday night. Khan's next opponent could potentially be Danny Garcia or Robert Guerrero.
In a recently uploaded YouTube video by Sy Ahmed, the reigning WBC Silver welterweight champion said he hopes his next fight will be in March.
"Opponent-wise, we're looking at a few names at the moment," Khan muttered while catching his breath. "I've got a few options there. Look, Danny Garcia is fighting for the WBC title. Even though I'm the No. 1, he's got the opportunity to fight for it, him being the No 2."
Right off the bat, it seems Khan prefers facing Garcia over Guerrero. The British boxer could still be itching over his prior loss to the 27-year old Puerto Rican American. To recall, Garcia defeated Khan in the fourth round via technical knockout back in 2012, as per Box Rec.
If the rematch does happen, some boxing analysts believe Khan will be the underdog, even though he is the higher ranked fighter.
Boxing News 24 thinks Khan is the better pugilist in terms of hand quickness and agility. However, Garcia is the more powerful puncher, with a panted left hook that could potentially be the deciding factor in the match.
"I think I'll get my chance to win that title against him and have that rematch which I've been looking forward to for a long, long time," Khan said. "So hopefully the Danny Garcia rematch is a fight that can happen this summer, if he wins that is."
He added that he also wouldn't mind fighting 32-year old Robert Guerrero. Nicknamed "The Ghost," Guerrero holds a 33-3-1 record. BleacherReport said Guerrero does well in phone-booth boxing. His combination of lateral quickness, shoulder movement and dangerous uppercuts are enough to wear down any opponent.
This latest development might disappoint boxing fans who would much rather see Khan face International Boxing Federation welterweight champion Kell Brook.
The 29-year old Brook and his promoter Eddie Hearn have been heavily advocating a fight with Khan, scheduled this June at Wembley Stadium in London. Sky Sports reported that Brook has decided to fight at Wembley, regardless of Khan's choice of opponent.
"If he dislikes me that much, then he's got the chance to punch me in the face this summer," Brook said. "If he fights Garcia, then good luck to him. I'll be fighting a big name in the summer."
But before that, Brook will be defending his IBF welterweight title against Kevin Bizier at the Sheffield Arena in Yorkshire on March 26. It will be Brook's third title defense.
