Céline Dion reminisces about their love story as she mourns the death of her husband, René Angélil, who was diagnosed with cancer of the throat.
After a fierce battle with his illness, the famous songstress' husband has finally succumbed to cancer at the age of 73, just two days before his birthday on January 16.
A special feature in Us Weekly compiled several interviews with the 47-year-old singer as she recalled how Angélil came into her life and became her 'champion.'
According to the outlet, she first encountered Angélil when she was just 12 years old during the 1980s, when he became her manager.
"So maybe at 17, 18 years old, my feelings started to change for him. I kind of saw him differently. Make a long story short, [my mom] saw it coming too because she's a mom - mom knows best," she explained to Access Hollywood in September 2013.
They married in December of 1994, and were able to renew their marriage vows in 2000 before they were blessed with their firstborn, René-Charles.
After nine years, the famous crooner became pregnant with twins, Eddy and Nelson, who are now both 9 years old.
But like other relationships, Dion admitted that they had rough times, which they simply remedied with laughter and open communication.
"René and I had our tough times. It wasn't always easy. We laugh. We joke. We kid each other. We want our marriage to last forever. Talk over everything and you'll find you are still on the honeymoon. Communication - it's the most important. It's the secret," she revealed in July 2013 as per US Weekly.
When they learned about her husband's illness, Dion admitted to having a difficult time coping, especially with her children looking up to her for strength.
"I'm trying really hard to show my children that sickness and things happen in life. You cannot be crying and be depressed and consistently talk about, 'Oh my God,'" Us Weekly quoted her in an interview August last year.
Amidst the challenges, she expressed her wish for Angélil to live his life to the fullest.
"My love, we love you. Lots of strength tonight. Promise me something. Just enjoy. Just enjoy. Just let it go. We love you," she said in a message to Angélil during an interview before she stepped onstage again.
And, like her most popular single, "My Heart Will Go On," the Canadian singer's life will definitely "go on," especially since she will be raising their children on her own.
