Alan Rickman, much-loved actor of film, stage and TV of the past three decades, has passed away in London, aged 69. The British actor, best known for his role as Professor Severus Snape in the famed "Harry Potter" series, died "surrounded by family and friends" after battling cancer.
While the beloved actor might have enjoyed a fresh fanbase for his role as Snape in the "Harry Potter" franchise, the actor gave life to other iconic roles in film, stage and TV. The star's slack diction made him stand in his various projects across the generations, The Guardian reports.
The actor's death has sparked tributes from fans worldwide, and Rickman's co-stars from the "Harry Potter" films were among the first to pay their respects to the revered actor. Danielle Radcliffe, who played the role of Harry Potter, wrote a lenghty and heartfelt post on "one of the loyalest and most supportive people I've ever met in the film industry."
Likewise, JK Rowling who penned the books, took to her Twitter to mourn the passing of the actor who played Severus Snape, expressing her shock over the news of his death. Rowling said that "everyone loved Alan."
Here are some of Rickman's most iconic roles:
1. Colonel Brandon in "Sense and Sensibility." (1995)
Rickman played the role of the "quiet and dignified" gentleman, Colonel Brandon, in the 1995 adaptation of the Jane Austen novel, "Sense and Sensibility." Rickman's characte falls in love with the romantic Marianne Dashwood, played by Kate Winslet. Brandon is constantly rejected by Winslet's character until he succeeds in winning her affections and the pair get married. The film earned seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress.
2. Harry in "Love Actually." (2003)
The British actor played the role of Harry, a husband who strays from his wife, Karen (Emma Thompson) with his new secretary Mia (Heike Makatsch). While Harry is comfortable with his marriage to Karen, he becomes seduced by the seductive Mia. He buys an expensive necklace for Mia, which is discovered by Karen. While Harry expresses regret for his actions, Karen says that he has made a mockery, not only of their marriage, but also the way she choses to live her life.
Thompson also paid a tribute to her co-star, saying that the actor was her friend, and it was painful. She added that "she just kissed him goodbye" reports Vanity Fair.

The British drama stars Rickman as the French king, and this is the second film he directed after the 1997 "The Winter Guest." Louis XIV employs landscaper Monsieur André Le Nôtre (Matthias Schoenaerts) and Sabine de Barra (Winslet), a woman with an unconventional taste for gardening.
4. Hans Gruber in "Die Hard." (1988)
Rickman played the role of German terrorist opposite Bruce Willis. This role would name Rickman's character as one of American Film Institute's best villains in history. Rickman later said that he almost rejected the role because "Die Hard" was a film he normally didn't like to do.
5. Sheriff of Nottingham in "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" (1991)
The British actor played the cruel Sheriff of Nottingham opposite Kevin Costner. The movie became a major box office hit when it was released.
