Before Melissa Benoist donned the blue and red costume as Superman's cousin, Supergirl was portrayed by actress Laura Vandervoort on the long-running show "Smallville." Vandervoort herself confirmed the report via Twitter, saying that she's "Thrilled to be announcing I'll be recurring as #Indigo on @supergirlcbsSo proud of the cast & this series.#Honored."

However, it's high time the two Supergirls meet, and CBS decided to bring the "Smallville" actress to guest star in the 2015 series, but as a different character.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Vandervoort will portray the superheroine-turned-villain Indigo, beginning episode 15. Indigo was described by the producers as a living, strong-willed-supercomputer who was sentenced to Fort Rozz when she turned against the people of Krypton. On Earth, she is determined not to let anyone stand in her way.

The 31-year-old actress is not the only former Supergirl to appear in the CBS series, though. Helen Slater, who starred in the role in TriStar's 1984 film, also appeared as a recurring character, playing the role of the current Kara Zor-El's adoptive mother.

Indigo is not the only new character to look forward to the rest of the season. Jeff Branson (The Young and the Restless) has been signed on to play Master Jailer, the forceful and unrelenting Fort Rozz jailguard, hellbent on catching of the escapees, even if it means brutally bringing them to justice.

Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said about the character, "One word: Chains."

If these updates are not exciting enough, Newsarama reported that Executive Producer Greg Berlanti, who used to be cagey about crossover reports, has confirmed that there are at least some internal talks to bring the CBS show together with one of the CW shows he's also heading. According to the outlet, it seems that chances are better than ever that fans will see Supergirl and The Flash together in at least an episode.

Berlanti shared, "I would love it, a lot of things would have to go right and people would have to say 'Yes,'. It would have to figured out very soon. It would all have to be figured out in the next month or so. As it remains right now we've talked internally about how cool it would be, but we haven't had official conversations."

He also said that CW Chief executive Mark Pedowitz is supportive about the possible crossover, which means that at least one network is on-board with the plan.

"Supergirl" airs on CBS Monday nights.
