Adrien Broner will get an opportunity to avenge his first-ever loss as Golden Boy Promotions announced his rematch this week with reigning WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana.
GBP CEO Richard Schaefer told RingTV that Broner exercised his rematch clause and that the second fight will take place either on April 19 or 26 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas or at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.
"Broner exercised his rematch option today," Schaefer told RingTV on Friday. "We have informed Maidana and will now work with Showtime and the two teams on getting a date locked in. I am looking right now at two dates, April 19 and April 26. Both of which are Showtime Championship Boxing dates."
Broner suffered the first defeat of his young boxing career against Maidana in their first showdown Dec. 12 in San Antonio. The 24-year-old American was favored to win heading into the match, but Maidana ran away with a decisive unanimous decision victory to grab the WBA welterweight title.
Broner admitted on Thursday, a day before the rematch was announced, through his Twitter account that he was outhustled by Maidana in their first showdown, but he vowed that things will be different if they collide once again.
On the other hand, Maidana's manager, Sebastian Cortusi did not hide his disappointment over the arranged rematch with Broner, saying that they were already looking forward to facing Floyd Mayweather Jr, who is reportedly considering the Argentine for his next fight on May 3.
"I cannot deny that we are disappointed since we thought that Marcos had earned his right to face Mayweather. We are open for discussions about any significant fights. If a Broner rematch is one of those options, Team Maidana will listen to what Golden Boy Promotions and Al Haymon have to offer," Cortusi told Boxingscene.
Maidana seemed like a viable option for Mayweather's next fight, but Schaefer stressed that the Broner-Maidana rematch makes more sense at this stage since fight fans are still talking about their first showdown.
"The first fight was a 'Fight of The Year' candidate," Schaefer told Boxingscene. "The boxing world is still buzzing about it. Everybody is still talking about it and you have to hand it to Broner that he wants to go in and set the record straight. These guys do not like each other, in the lead up to the last fight, during the fight. You are going to see a lot of that animosity carried over into the rematch."
