The follow-up to 2013's worldwide hit, "The Conjuring," will once again showcase paranormal investigators and demonologists, Ed and Lorraine Warren, portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, respectively, Entertainment Weekly reported.
James Wan's sequel for the film will put the Warren couple in Enfield, England investigating a malevolent supernatural force in a council house, where single mother Peggy Hodgeson (Frances O'Connor) and her four children (Madison Wolfe, Lauren Esposito, Patrick McAuley, and Benjamin Haigh) reside, The Wrap listed.
Just like the original movie, "The Conjuring 2" is based on a supposedly true story of the Enfield Poltergeist, Cinema Blend wrote. The highly documented paranormal activity case took place in the 1970s.
"The haunting that afflicted the Hodgson family is probably one of the most documented paranormal cases in the world," said Wan, who paid a visit to the Enfield borough of London, England, where the supernatural activity occurred in 1977, according to a separate report from Entertainment Weekly.
The original "The Conjuring" flick debuted with a $20 million budget in 2013 and has surpassed its rivals, "Pacific Rim" and "The Lone Ranger," at the time, The Hollywood Reporter wrote. The movie's surprising stellar performance at the box office is one of the biggest success stories of that particular summer, a triumph for Toby Emmerich's New Line and parent company Warner Bros.
"The Conjuring" also earned domestically more than "White House Down" and "After Earth," The Hollywood Reporter noted. It was one of the few horror flicks to be given an A- CinemaScore. In general, horror films usually score lower. According to Box Office Mojo, the movie's domestic total gross was $137,400,141 and $180,600,000 in foreign theaters, totaling at $318,000,141 worldwide.
In an interview with Collider back in April 2015, Wan said that "the idea of continuing the saga of Ed and Lorraine Warren is actually very exciting," and that has pushed the filmmaker to go back and "nurture" the "baby" he created by making a sequel.
Production for the film wrapped earlier in December 2015 and is currently in post-production, The Wrap noted. Also starring is Simon McBurney, Collider stated in a separate report. Chad and Carey Hayes wrote the movie's screenplay.
"The Conjuring 2" is slated for release in theaters on June 10, 2016.
