If you still haven't heard, last year's Miss Universe beauty pageant became one of the most controversial ever when host Steve Harvey announced the wrong winner.
He finally broke his silence on Monday, and explained what happened when he wrongly announced Miss Colombia as the winner of the pageant.
Harvey shared, "Here's the situation: Now, when the mistake was made, when I said the wrong woman's name, I can only give information I had. No one knows, and that information is not in the teleprompter because you've got two women standing there. I read what was on the teleprompter, then I read what was on the card."
He added, "I said the name that was on the card. When I walked off, everything was cool...and then, after that, all hell broke loose. All I heard was people say, 'That's the wrong name'...and all I hear is confusion backstage."
As seen on the card, Us Magazine noted that the text for the runner up was bolder than the font for the actual winner's name.
Harvey owned up to his mistake, but not all is forgiven, because Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez isn't talking to him, at least, not yet. The host said on his show, "I've talked to people backstage. Even me and the director had a long talk. But I haven't been able to reach out and talk to Miss Colombia. Now, have I tried? Yes. But haven't gotten a response."
As for Miss Colombia, ABC News reported that the Miss Universe runner-up, despite appearing calm at the coronation, was heartbroken over the crown she had on for just a few minutes. She revealed that she "cried a ton" when her win was reversed within minutes, and on live television.
Speaking with Univision, the 22-year-old beauty shared how the error has affected her, saying that "I went up to my parents' room and, obviously, I was very sad, I was in bad shape, I was crying. I cried a ton that night."
She also expressed her distaste at how the network handled the error, adding that "In four minutes they destroy your dreams, they throw it in a bag, and they throw it in the trash. They could have done it another way. I feel like it doesn't matter to them the feelings of a girl who has worked for her whole life for a dream."
What do you think of all the Miss Universe aftermath kerfuffle?
