Five actors are nominated for a Golden Globe for their spectacular performances in television comedies. The list of nominees include Hollywood newcomers, who are up against TV and film veterans.
The nominees for the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Comedy Series are:
Jason Bateman, "Arrested Development"- Bateman reprised his role as the hapless Michael Bluth in the Netflix return of the cult comedy hit that was canceled too soon. Although the Netflix reboot received mixed reviews, Bateman continued to shine as Michael, the character who tries to keep his bizarre family together amidst constant mishaps and legal issues. Bateman's unique, dead-pan comedic delivery has endeared him to comedy audiences.
Don Cheadle, "House of Lies"- Cheadle, who won in this category last year, continues to embody the role of the crass, womanizing Marty Kaan. Cheadle's Kaan is a management consultant who exploits his clients to get ahead. Cheadle is excellent as playing the egotistical, unscrupulous Kaan, who branches out to start his own firm. Cheadle is wonderfully devilish in the role, exuding a rough charisma that makes his character memorable.
Michael J. Fox, "The Michael J. Fox Show"- In his new show, Michael J. Fox proves that he can still make audiences laugh. While the show had not gotten fantastic reviews, Fox's star power endures, making him a critic and fan favorite. On the show, Fox plays Mike Henry, a beloved TV news anchor who took a leave of absence when he was diagnosed with Parkinson's, the disease that Fox suffers from in real life. After taking a five year hiatus, Mike is getting back into the business, while also trying to juggle his family life. Fox proves that he does not let his physical ailment prevent him from doing what he does best.
Jim Parsons, "The Big Bang Theory"- Parsons has won both Emmy and Golden Globe awards for his portrayal of quirky genius Sheldon Cooper. Parsons embodies Cooper's scientific brilliance and social ineptitude. Despite his awkwardness, he found an equally brilliant and quirky girlfriend, neurobiologist Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik), with whom he entered into a "relationship agreement." Parsons is excellent at portraying Sheldon's odd idiosyncrasies in a hilarious and endearing way.
Andy Samberg, "Brooklyn Nine-Nine"- "Saturday Night Live" alum Andy Samberg steals the show as Jake Peralta, a talented detective who has some childish tendencies. Peralta's natural skill means he never has to work very hard at his job, which is proven by his winning arrest record in the precinct. Yet, his new commanding officer does not take kindly to his facetious ways. Samberg is wonderful as Peralta, who has a serious side buried beneath his wise-cracking exterior.
Prediction: Andy Samberg, "Brooklyn Nine-Nine"
While he may seem like an odd choice as the winner in comparison to the veteran actors in this category, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has given this award to actors who are nominated from new shows two years running. Samberg is the face of bizarre and often very random comedy, which he brings to the new series in a fitting way. His portrayal of the childish but intelligent Peralta is commendable, even though the show is lacking in popularity. However, it is also predicted that Michael J. Fox could also win in this category, as he has been a Hollywood favorite for decades.
