Peru Travel News: 1.2 Million People Traveling for New Year; Trujillo, Piura & Chiclayo Favored Spots

Peru has been seeing an influx of tourists in the New Year season. According to Peru's Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Magali Silva projected. 1.2 million people were projected to travel throughout the country which would lead to US$105 million in revenue. The country has been known to draw tourists because of its rich history and culture. 

It was reported by Andina that the influx will increase by 7.5 percent compared to the similar period of 2015. The influx in tourists only proves that sustained domestic tourist flow is registered on long weekends.

According to the website, favorite tourist destinations are Trujillo, Piura and Chiclayo, which boast of extraordinary beaches. The sites are followed by the Southern cities of Ica, Arequipa and Cusco, which are rich both in culture and history.

Tourism is the most rapidly growing industry in Peru, which is growing annually at a rate of 25 percent over the past five years. According to the website, tourism is growing rapidly in Peru at a relatively faster rate than any other country in South America.According to data from the site, the most popular countries of origin for tourists are the United States, Chile, Argentina, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Brazil, Spain, Canada, and Italy.

Cultural tourism comprises the largest sector of the tourism industry in Peru. Pre-Columbian civilizations, which includes the Inca Empire, Chavin, Moche and Nasca have left a large archeological and cultural impact on the country. The ruins of Machu Picchu are the most recognized ruins of Peru. Other popular ruins include those of Chan Chan, Sipan, Kuelap, and the Nazca Lines. 

Twenty-two percent of Lima Metropolitan area's residents said that they would visit Lunahuana, Cerro Azul, Huancaya, Huaral and Huacho among other provinces.

The results of the survey also said that most preferred accommodation options would include: Lodging establishments (45 percent), followed by relatives' homes (42 percent), friend's homes (9 percent) and other types of accommodations (4 percent).

Due to the surge in visitors who would visit the country it is estimated that an average 75 percent hotel occupancy rate should be reached.

Interprovincial ground transportation companies have also projected that ticket sales will increase by 4 to 8 percent. Meanwhile, they have also estimated that airfare sales will increase by 7 percent compared to the same period of 2015.

Lonely Planet describes Peru as a country rich in culture and history. Tourism is primarily geared towards archeological monuments, ecotourism in the Amazon, tourism in colonial cities and beach tourism. It was also reported that the satisfaction rating of tourists who have visited Peru is 94 percent.
