CES 2014 continues to pile on the impressive gadget debuts. Razer, one of the best PC manufacturers today, has revealed that they are planning a new PC that would not only be easy to mod and upgrade over time, but may offer a subscription plan that would send users the best new PC parts available to keep the PC up to date. This would be a huge boon to gamers frustrated by the constantly evolving specs for PC games.
The new Razer PC, Project Christine, will allow users to easily swap out different sections of the PC to allow for easy upgrades when new hardware is released. The PC will have different modules representing the CPU, GPU, RAM, and internal memory, which can be swapped out and synced to Project Christine whenever a user wants to upgrade the machine. Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan says the company may offer users the PC under a subscription model to make it even more accessible:
"Because of the modular nature of this PC, one thing that we could potentially even do is to put this on a subscription model..." Tan told Gamespot.
The CEO went on to explain that multiple subscription tiers could be offered, with the highest tier offering users the latest parts and modules when they were released. The new PC components would be mailed right to a user's door, which the user would then swap out for the older part and then send the older piece of the PC back to Razer. This subscription plan would have a monthly fee, however, no price points were discussed by Tan.
Tan is excited by this new project as it will allow even casual PC users to be able to upgrade their rigs to allow for a high level of performance both for personal use and for gaming as well. In addition, the subscription plan could offer users the chance to have a high-end PC for much less than it would cost to modify a PC by normal means.
"So instead of having to pay thousands of dollars in a single shot, there could be a standard subscription fee and you could have always, at any point of time, the best possible PC," Tan said.
It will be interesting to see if Project Christine starts a whole new revolution when it comes to how people look at the PC, or if the increasingly mobile world of today has left the PC in the dust.
