Sony announced at CES 2014 that they would be implementing a cloud streaming game service for a variety of platforms called PlayStation Now that would allow users to play a variety of different games on devices ranging from the PlayStation 3 and 4 to smart TVs and mobile devices. Now, Social Media Manager for Sony Computer Entertainment America Sid Shuman has revealed further, specific details about PlayStation Now, including what sort of Internet speeds users will need.

In a PlayStation Blog post, Shuman revealed that due to the very nature of PlayStation Now users will need a fairly strong Internet connection for the cloud streaming service to work as fluidly as the regular disk or download-based versions of a game.

"The PS Now team is currently estimating that a 5 mbps connection will provide a good experience for most game, and they'll be gathering user feedback during the closed beta before announcing more details," wrote Shuman.

While Shuman did not state when the beta program for PlayStation Now would begin, Sony is rumored to be trying to get the service up and running sooner rather than later in 2014. Shuman stated that summer 2014 is the goal for bringing PlayStation Now to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, without providing an exact timetable for when other devices such as the PlayStation Vita and the Sony Bravia TV will receive the service.

Oddly enough, Shuman went on to acknowledge that when he was using PlayStation Now at CES 2014 the service caused a small drop in quality for the visuals of games.

"At this early stage of PS Now's development, pixel counters and graphics aficionados might spot some minor concessions in the visual department, such as compression artifacts, consistent with high-quality internet video or gameplay streamed via PS Vita Remote Play," he said.

Considering that PlayStation Now is still in the demo stage at this point, the service may be able to improve its graphics once the release date for the streaming service is set.

So far, four games have been seen being played on the PlayStation Now streaming app: The Last of Us, God of War: Ascension, Puppeteer, and Beyond: Two Souls. Sony has yet to reveal what other games may be available on the platform and if older games will be on PlayStation Now as well.
