Now that 2014 is getting into a full swing, so are the rumors about upcoming smartphones, and the Samsung Galaxy S5 is at the top of the rumor mill's hit list. According to a new report, it's highly likely that the Galaxy S5 will ship with a fingerprint sensor, much like Apple's iPhone 5S.

Website DigiTimes claims that inside sources have revealed that many major smartphone manufacturers will be including fingerprint sensors in their 2014 flagship devices.

"Korea-based smartphone vendors Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics reportedly are planning to adopt fingerprint sensors from Validity and Sweden-based FingerPrint Cards (FPCs), respectively, for their upcoming high-end models, the sources revealed," writes DigiTimes.

Bear in mind that DigiTimes doesn't have a spotless track record, and while most people do view the sensor as a gimmick, it still does make sense that Samsung doesn't want to be the odd one out. After all, Galaxy S4 sales were a disappointment despite being amazing by any other company's standards (except maybe Apple), and Samsung can't afford to lose its momentum with the Galaxy S5.

Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy S5 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona late February, so it won't be long before we see what really lies underneath the hood. When it does release, the Galaxy S5 is rumored to come in a premium model with a metal casing and a normal variant with the usual polycarbonate shell.

Rumored specs for the Samsung Galaxy S5 include a 5.25-inch 2K HD display with a 2560X1440 resolution, a 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor or a 64-bit Exynos processor depending on the region, either 3GB RAM or 4GB RAM, a 16-megapixel rear-facing camera, and Android 4.4 KitKat. The smartphone could also boast a revamped user interface.
