James Gunn reportedly revealed his choice of who will play Peter Quill's father in the upcoming follow-up to the "Guardians of the Galaxy" is no less than Disney legend Kurt Russell.
Insider sources reportedly told The Wrap that the casting process for Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" has already begun.
In the report, the outlet cited that the director's first choice is Russell.
While Marvel has yet to offer the role to "The Hateful Eight" star, and the actor has yet to read the "Guardians 2" script, The Wrap noted that word from the insiders claim that they are expected to hold meetings soon.
According to Cinema Blend, the role of Peter Quill's father is highly coveted because the sequel's storyline is set to revolve around the Star-Lord's discovery of the other half of his parentage.
For those who missed it, helmer James Gunn himself revealed the "importance of fathers" in the upcoming 2017 Marvel Cinematic Universe film.
Cinema Blend noted that Gunn would not follow the comic book version of the story where J'Son of Spartax is Quill's father, which means the identity of Star-Lord's father is still a mystery.
Even so, the outlet still sees Russell as a great fit for the franchise, given his similar appeal and sense of humor as that of Chris Pratt's character.
"Depending on how Peter's father written, Russell could easily pull off the same kind of sense of humor Pratt's Peter has, which would make watching them riff with each other one of the highlights of the movie," the outlet explained.
The first "Guardians" movie also gave out some Easter eggs about Quill's father, who was described to be from an ancient alien race that the Nova Corps "had never seen before."
Cinema Blend also noted how the mysterious character was described by Quill's mother as an "angel."
He is also someone whom Yondu deemed worthy of the term "jackass," a term that Russell can definitely channel very well considering his performances in "Big Trouble in Little China," "Tombstone," "Escape from New York," "Stargate" and the upcoming Quentin Tarantino film "The Hateful Eight."
Furthermore, the outlet deems it rational for Marvel to cast a big-named actor into the mix.
Of course, this should all be taken with a grain of salt since nothing has been confirmed yet.
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is set to arrive in theaters on May 5, 2017 as part of the phase 3 of the rapidly expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe.
