The nominees for the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Drama are actors that transcend the boundaries of scripts and make characters their own. The five actors in the category are nominated for roles that range from a doctor to a meth cook.
The nominees for the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Drama Series are:
Bryan Cranston, "Breaking Bad"- Cranston will forever be attached to his iconic character of Walter White, an Albuquerque chemistry teacher who becomes the most notorious meth cook in the American Southwest. When White is diagnosed with a late stage of lung cancer, he teams up with his former student and current meth cook/dealer, Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), to cook meth as a way to ensure his family has enough money after he's gone. White is incredible at completely embodying White, who turns from a family man into a megalomanic meth cook and dealer.
Liev Schreiber, "Ray Donovan"- Schreiber's Donovan is a sophisticated Hollywood "fixer" while also being a south Boston gangster. He was able to get out of a working class life by being a problem fixer for wealthy Hollywood clients. Schreiber is excellent at portraying Schreiber's professionalism and wealth, while also showing his hotheadedness and inability to shake his past. His constantly troubled family belies Donovan's seemingly professional life.
Michael Sheen, "Master of Sex"- Sheen is excellent as Dr. William Masters, a brilliant doctor who is intent on exploring the nature of human sexuality and what happens to the human body during sexual intercourse. However, Masters himself is sexually repressed, despite his study of sex, which is a subject that is considered lewd during the show's time period of the 1950s. Although Masters helps women conceive in his professional life, he struggles to get his wife pregnant.
Kevin Spacey, "House of Cards"- Spacey's Frank Underwood epitomizes the underhanded maneuverings of Washington politics. Underwood begins as the Democratic House Majority Whip, and has hopes to be appointed U.S. Secretary of State. But when he is passed over for the position--which was promised to him--he sets a plan in motion to take his colleagues down so he can get to the top. Spacey is superb as the series antihero, and is wonderful at giving snarky, "Richard III"-style asides to the camera.
James Spader, "The Blacklist"- James Spader is at his best as Raymond "Red" Reddington on the NBC thriller. Red is an ex-government agent who is one of the FBI's Most Wanted fugitives for brokering deals for criminals around the world. He is known as the "Concierge of Crime." Now, he surrendered to the FBI, helping them catch high-profile terrorists, but only if he speaks to rookie profiler Elizabeth "Liz" Keen (Megan Boone). Spader is excellent at portraying the creepy, mysterious yet charismatic character.
Prediction: Bryan Cranston/Walter White, "Breaking Bad"
While Kevin Spacey is predicted to take home the award, the Golden Globe Award should be given to Cranston for his searingly real portrayal of White, an antihero whose personal corruption is simultaneously fascinating and disturbing. Cranston shows White's exterior hardness and growing greed, which stems from latent feelings of inferiority. His egotism reaches epic proportions, which Cranston portrays with almost unbelievable authenticity. Cranston's acting virtuosity is at the same level--if not better--than many movie actors, and has forever raised the bar for television dramas.
