Apple vs. Samsung Sales 2013: Apple Inc., Samsung Gain Smartphone Subscribers in U.S.; HTC, Motorola Slip, Says comScore

Apple Inc. and Samsung have improved their sales market share in the United States as Americans with smartphones grew by 3 percentage points from August.

According to comScore, 152.5 million people in the U.S. now own a smartphone, which accounted for 63.8 percent of the overall mobile market penetration.

Apple was able to comfortably maintain first place as the top OEM among U.S. smartphone subscribers. Apple accounted for 41.2 percent of the smartphone subscribers' market share for the three months ending in November 2013, which is a minor increase of 0.5 percentage points compared to the same period ending in August 2013.

Apple was able to maintain a double-digit lead against its nearest competitor - Samsung - by 15.2 percentage points.

Samsung saw the highest smartphone subscriber market share increase by 1.7 percentage points. Despite the percentage increase, Samsung still ranked second. Samsung garnered 26 percent of the market share, which is an increase from the 24.3 percent it represented by August 2013.

Motorola narrowly kept its third place finish by 0.2 percentage points against LG. Motorola encountered a slip of 0.2 percentage points, but finished November 2013 with 6.7 percent of the smartphone subscribers' market share in the U.S.

LG placed fourth, which is an increase from fifth place in August. Despite improving its ranking, LG also fell by 0.2 percentage points once November 2013 concluded. LG accounted for 6.5 percent of the market share.

HTC lost the most smartphone subscribers with 1 percent of the market. HTC previously ranked third by August 2013 but fell to fifth place with 6.4 percent of the market share. HTC previously accounted for 7.4 percent of the market share.
