When was the last time a woman was able to occupy the personas of both a national sex symbol, and political ground-shaker at the same time? Well, Eva Longoria seems to do it quite well, and she was just named Maxim's Woman of the Year.

"She was the sexiest suburbanite in history on Desperate Housewives, and now she's a big shot producer, a savvy businesswoman, and our 2014 Woman of the Year," said Maxim on its Web site announcing the honor. "Is there anything Eva Longoria can't do? (Hint: The answer is no.)"

In a sneak peek of the interview reported in USA Today, Longoria said it was "especially awesome after how long it's been since my first cover. I've had a beautiful relationship with Maxim over all these years."

Longoria has indeed graced the popular men's magazine numerous times, but she has much more than modeling and acting on her resume these days. Longoria has worked to keep her mind as sharp as her physique, and holds a master's degree. As her career has blossomed, she has also funneled her star clout toward philanthropy and political activism.

Longoria is a key player in the Latino Victory Project, which advocates for the promotion of comprehensive immigration reform and is credited by many with solidifying the Latino support for the election of Barack Obama.

As well, through the Eva Longoria Foundation, she funds programs and studies aimed at elevating young Latinas in the United States.

Currently, Longoria is in the final stages of a Prizeo campaign to support her foundation. Donors are entered into a drawing to win a prize of spending a day on set with Longoria for the filming of "Devious Maids." The contest includes air fare and accommodation for the winner and a guest, but the contest ends on Jan. 10.
