The Xbox One has been on quite a roll since it was launched on Nov. 22, and though the console may have been slightly behind the PlayStation 4 after launch, Microsoft may have had the last laugh of 2013 and surpassed the PlayStation 4's sales.

In a new Xbox Wire post Microsoft thanks their fans for making the Xbox One a success in 2013, and makes the claim that over 3 million copies of the console have been sold just in 2013:

"Together, we ushered in a new era of games and entertainment with Xbox One. Over 3 million Xbox One consoles were sold to consumers in 13 countries before the end of 2013. It's been incredible to see Xbox One selling at a record-setting pace for Xbox, and we were honored to see Xbox One become the fastest-selling console in the U.S. during our launch month in November. Since our launch, demand for Xbox One has been strong, selling out throughout the holidays at most retailers worldwide. We are continuing to work hard to deliver additional consoles to retailers as fast as possible."

This is significant as Sony has yet to state if the PlayStation 4 has pass the 3 million sales mark, meaning that the Xbox One may have passed the PlayStation 4 in sales. The PlayStation 4 initially had the edge in sales by a slim margin of around 100,000 units, the console has faced supply challenges which may have put it behind the Xbox One.

Microsoft also thanked fans for using the Xbox One not just as a video game console but for making it a multipurpose entertainment platform with games, apps, and other features that people can enjoy:

"We also love that you are seeing the promise of an all-in-one entertainment system. Millions of hours of live TV have been watched and millions of hours of app entertainment have been enjoyed. We are proud to have the most passionate, engaged, and simply the best fans in the world. It was fun to share the holidays with so many of you."
It looks as though the Xbox One may be gaining steam in 2014, and considering that the console will have exclusives such as Titanfall, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare and a new Halo game coming during the year Microsoft may have the edge on Sony in the console wars for the foreseeable future.
