Next week Microsoft is set to re-release a botched software update initially launched during December.

On Jan. 14, the re-launch of the Surface Pro 2 firmware update is expected to rollout.

The update initially made its debut on Dec. 10, however, Surface owners encountered error codes when trying to install the update. Microsoft decided to pull the Dec. 10 update and promised a fix after the December holiday season.

A January release date for the firmware re-release may have been confirmed, according to one Microsoft Community forum member following a phone call with a Surface Support team.

"Just got off a call with Surface support team and they confirmed that the new firmware will be released January 14th," wrote Jackabite. "Interesting the support team have been told by Microsoft that the botched December firmware only affected 3 in 1000 devices, needless to say I nearly fell off my chair when they said that!"

WinBeta contacted Microsoft about the Jan. 14 firmware date.

"Our customers' experiences are very important to us and we are working hard to release an alternative update package as soon as possible," a Microsoft spokesperson said in response.

The Dec. 10 firmware update for the Surface Pro 2 included an improvement on system stability, an updated Wi-Fi driver for wireless display, connectivity with wireless access points, and improvements to the color fidelity. The tablet's update also had an optimized two-finger trackpad use, enhanced audio experience when connected to the Display Port 1.2 device, and better Surface Cover interaction including power-saving functionality.
