Juan Manuel Marquez could eventually get his wish of having a rematch with tormentor Timothy Bradley as Top Rank Promotions chief Bob Arum confirmed that the fight will likely happen this year.
Arum said that Marquez could get another shot at Bradley, but it will all depend on who Manny Pacquiao will choose for his next fight on April 12 in Las Vegas.
Marquez has been pushing for a rematch, saying that he was robbed during the first showdown in which Bradley scored a close split decision victory.
Pacquiao's list of possible opponents was narrowed down to Bradley and reigning WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov.
The Pacquiao-Bradley rematch appears to be the most likely choice, considering the fact that the Filipino boxing icon has an axe to grind with Bradley, who scored a controversial split decision win in their WBO welterweight title showdown in June 2012.
"Marquez will probably fight late in the spring. The guy he wants to fight is Bradley again, but Bradley would rather fight Manny," Arum told ESPN.
But if Pacquiao decides to face Provodnikov, his good friend and former sparring partner, Arum said that Marquez vs Bradley 2 will be seriously considered.
"If Manny decides to fight Provodnikov, then we can try and make a Bradley-Marquez matchup," Arum said in an interview with the Las Vegas Review Journal. "But let's see what happens with Manny first."
Arum also discussed the possible fifth showdown between bitter rivals Marquez and Pacquiao. The world-renowned promoter sounded cold to the idea, saying that Pacquiao wants another rematch, but the Mexican warrior is not interested in fighting the former pound-for-pound king anymore.
The 40-year-old Mexican previously said there is no reason to stage Pacquiao vs Marquez 5 after his sensational sixth-round knockout win in their fourth showdown.
"Marquez has put himself out of the running (for Pacquiao's next fight) because he doesn't want the fight," Arum said. "He hasn't priced himself out of the fight; he's just not interested at any price. What he's saying for him, it makes a lot of sense. He's like, 'How can I do any better against Pacquiao than knocking him out?'"
