Manny Pacquiao did not rule out the possibility of bolting out of Bob Arum's Top Rank Promotions and becoming a free agent next summer, as he looks to finally arrange a showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2015.
Pacquiao, who denied the reported mega-bout between him and Mayweather in September, believed his showdown with the Grand Rapids native looks impossible as of the moment because of his association with Arum, though the Saranggani congressman is still open to setting up a meeting with the undefeated boxing champion in the ring at some point down the road.
"Floyd has also been saying that he will only fight me if I separate from Top Rank and Bob Arum," Pacquiao told Phil Boxing writer Eddie Alinea, according to the Examiner.
"That's impossible because my contract is still valid this year. That means, if I don't renew my contract, we can talk next year. Floyd has been telling the whole world this and that's okay with me," he added.
Will Pacquiao Become a Free Agent After 2014?
Boxing analysts believe Pacquiao would do everything he can to make his fight with Mayweather finally happen. As tax issues continue to give him all kinds of problems, Pacquiao wants to finish his career with enough money in his bank, and no fight out there that can provide him with more money than the Mayweather slugfest.
Moreover, Pacquiao is aware that only a victory or perhaps a respectable loss against Mayweather will give him some sort of vindication after absorbing a sixth-round TKO to rival Juan Manuel Marquez in 2012.
The 40-year-old Marquez has no intention of fighting Pacquiao ever again, but the Pacman can still enhance his image by providing a tough challenge to the man universally recognized as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world.
What's Next?
Pacquiao vs. Mayweather might have been the biggest fight of all, but boxing fans may have to wait for another year for things to finally happen. In the meantime, both Pacquiao and Mayweather are set to reveal their respective opponents in the coming days.
Pacquiao is penciling a fight with either Ruslan Provodnikov or Timothy Bradley in April while Mayweather is choosing between Marcos Maidana and Amir Khan for the May 3 event.
