The Los Angeles Lakers are hoping to make a playoff push once they finally get healthy, but recent rumors suggest that they are also looking for help elsewhere.
CBS Sports reported that the Lakers inquired about a possible trade centered on Kyle Lowry of the Toronto Raptors. Sources said that the Lakers consider Lowry as their best option to improve their guard rotation, which has been badly hit by injuries this season.
Kobe Bryant is still nursing a broken knee and is not expected to return soon. Jordan Farmar, who just returned for the Lakers last week, re-injured his hamstring and will be out for at least four weeks. Veteran point guard Steve Nash is also out due to nerve irritation in his back, while Steve Blake is still recovering from an elbow injury.
However, Los Angeles is only one of several teams that have expressed strong interest in the veteran playmaker, who is averaging 15.7 points to go along with 7.5 assists and 4.1 rebounds per game this season. It is widely believed that Raptors GM Masai Ujiri is willing to wait for the trade deadline before striking a deal.
"In addition to the Lakers, Knicks and Nets, the Timberwolves, Warriors and Celtics are among the teams that have inquired about a deal with the Raptors for Lowry, league sources say," CBS Sports reported. "With the deadline less than seven weeks away, Ujiri is said to have multiple deals he could do for Lowry that would involve receiving an expiring contract in return or slotting him into another team's trade exception."
The Lakers' stance could also change, as reports suggested that their front-office executives are willing to let their injured players get healthy before deciding whether or not to make a major roster shakeup before the deadline.
The emergence of young point guard Kendall Marshall could also convince Lakers to stay put this season.
Marshall, who was acquired by the Lakers from the NBA D-League, had a career night in their 110-99 win over the Utah Jazz on Friday, racking up 20 points, 15 assists, and six rebounds in 40 minutes of playing time. The 22-year-old point guard also got a lot of support from Jodie Meeks, who added 18 points and six assists.
