The nominees for Colombia's own version of Oscars were announced this week.
On Monday, the Colombian Academy of Motion Picture, Arts, and Sciences, known as the ACACC, unveiled the full list of nominees for its fourth Macondo Awards ceremony, which will be held at Bogota's Hotel Tequendama on Dec. 4, teleSUR reported. All of the film nominees were released between Nov. 1, 2013 and June 30, 2015.
Ciro Guerra's "Embrace of the Serpent" bagged most of the nominations, teleSUR wrote. The film scored eight nominations at the Macondos and has been given prizes globally, such as the Art Cinema Award at Cannes. The movie is also on the list for Best Foreign Film at the Oscars.
"Embrace of the Serpent" is based on the diaries of German ethnologist Theodor Koch-Grunberg and botanist Richard Evan Schultes from the United States, the news outlet noted. The film centers on the two scientist's bond with Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and last survivor of his people, while looking for a scared healing plant in the rainforest over the course of 40 years.
The ACACC will honor documentary maker, Marta Rodriguez, who will accept the Lifetime Achievement Award for her contribution spanning over five decades to the industry. According to Rodriguez, she feels thankful to have had 50 years showing "Colombia as it really is, which is violent and has violated the human rights of many people," teleSUR reported.
