Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel will not be starting for the team after a video of him partying and drinking champagne surfaced online and went viral.
Daily Mail said the team's coach, Mike Pettine has expressed great disappointment for the quarterback as he said earlier that Manziel would be the starting player for the remaining games of the season.
In the video, Manziel was seen partying with a group of guys while drinking champagne at a nightclub in Austin, Texas last Friday night. Previously, the Browns star had submitted himself for three months in a rehabilitation facility.
"Everyone in this organization wants what is best for Johnny just like we do for every player in our locker room. I'm especially disappointed in his actions and behavior because he has been working very hard," Pettine said in a statement quoted by Daily Mail.
The coach decided that Josh McCown will replace Manziel as the starting quarterback in their game versus the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night.
"The improvements from last year to this year have been tremendous but he still has to consistently demonstrate that he has gained a good understanding of what it takes to be successful at the quarterback position on this level. It goes well beyond the field," added the Browns coach.
However, he also said that the team will continue to support Manziel despite their decision to replace him with McCown.
According to ESPN, Pettine also mentioned in his weekly "The Mike Pettine Show" on the Cleveland Browns Radio Network that he felt like Manziel violated the trust which the team gave him.
He added that team officials have already spoken to the quarterback and told him he is expected to act the right way in the future.
It was also noted in the ESPN report that Manziel previously started for the Browns during the team's loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Manziel has assured his team that he will do away with his actions which embarrass the organization.
But the coach told Fox Sports that they have vision for the team and for the players on how they should handle themselves.
"It's not just pure football here, it's truly player development on and off the field. We always say to whom much is given, much is expected, and that's true for all of our players," Pettine noted.
This is not the latest incident involving Manziel since he was stopped by the police last month for driving recklessly along an interstate highway during an altercation with his girlfriend. Manziel has apologized for the incident, saying they just had a misunderstanding. He was not disciplined by the NFL for the incident.
