Vladimir Caamaño will topline an upcoming multi-camera comedy from NBC.

The Dominican comedian will star on "Vlad," a 30-minute TV show based on his life, Variety reported. The project comes from "Undateable" producers Adam Sztykiel and Bill Lawrence, who are also penning the script. Lawrence's Doozer production banner and Warner Bros. TV are behind the show.

"Vlad" will be loosely inspired from Caamaño's real-life family dynamic living with his Dominican father and older brother in the Bronx, Variety further reported. Caamaño is serving as a co-executive producer, with Sztykiel, Lawrence, and Doozer's Jeff Ingold executive producing.

Caamaño is a regular performer at New York's The Stand Comedy Club and often talks about his family in his stand-up routines, Latin Times wrote. He was also a finalist on NBC's Stand Up for Diversity program and has appeared in AXS' "Gotham Comedy Live." In addition, he won a diversity scholarship at The Peoples Improv Theater, where he joined writing classes, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Rising Diversity on TV

"Vlad" is the latest family comedy to be included in this season's development list. The Hollywood Reporter noted that "broadcast networks have been looking for comedies that explore family dynamics that aren't currently being portrayed on screen."

ABC, for example, has been praised for the diversity of "Fresh Off the Boat," "The Goldbergs," "Dr. Ken," and "Black-ish," the news outlet listed. The network is also preparing a Latino family comedy starring Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias from the now canceled "Cristela."

Broadcast networks highly prioritize family comedies this season. ABC Studios executive VP Patrick Moran told The Hollywood Reporter in October that the studio is searching for diverse voices, especially from the Latino community.

"People want to see reflections of themselves in something new," said Jonathan Davis, 20th Century Fox Television's president of creative affairs, as quoted by the news outlet.

In an interview with Variety this month, FX Networks and Networks Productions CEO John Landgraf spoke about diverse TV creators and their significance to the American society.

"We program to American society and everyone in it, and one of the best developments that's happened in American society is the diversity of voices in a whole variety of different areas, including in storytelling. I believe that if your brand is quality, which I think FX's brand is, quality doesn't have a gender or an ethnicity attached to it. It's just good," Landgraf explained to Variety.

The executive also said that one of the solutions to improve TV diversity is hire more showrunners "that are women and people of color," Variety noted.
