Guatemalans are the most most generous country in the Americas, with their time and money to those less fortunate according to a new reportwhich looked at citizens from around the world who were most willing to volunteer or donate to causes.
Guatemalens tend to volunteer more, donate money more often and are seen as more likely to help a stranger.
According to Charities Aid Foundation there are three factors that are taken into account when ranking a country's generosity. What counts are: first, the number of citizens that donate money, second - the amount a citizen spends volunteering and three - the amount of time a citizen gives in helping a stranger.
The countries surveyed were put in a "World Giving Index,"and ranked by which one was most generous. According to the Index, in the Americas, Guatemala came out ahead of all of its neighbors. The average income there is $288 dollars and it has around a population of 16 million.
A few Latin American countries increased their standing from the last time the survey was taken. For example, Honduras went ahead by 3 percent (33 % to 36%) and Nicaragua went from 30 percent to 34 percent in generosity.
Despite its economic challenges, the Americas as a whole is quite generous, they volunteer and give of their time. In general, according to the report, the Americas give little under 30 percent of time as volunteers and over 25 percent of monetary donations as a region.
There were a few key findings according from the World Giving Index per Charities Aid Foundation. Among the highlights were: that despite their highly developed economies, only five G20 countries are in this year's Top 20, which may mean that high GDP does not necessarily lead to an abundance of generosity, also, for the first time in six years of the World Giving Index, the report found that men are more likely to donate money than women and participation in donating money and helping a stranger has risen this year, while volunteering has seen a small downturn.
In general, several countries in the Americas ranked ahead of some more developed countries. Which could lead some to think, that income does not really predict if a citizen will donate monetarily, help a stranger or volunteer at a local soup kitchen.
