Hall of Famer promoter Don King believes the long-overdue showdown between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. will eventually take place, despite the denial of both camps about the alleged showdown between the two biggest names in boxing this coming September.
King, who promoted some of the biggest and most memorable bouts in the history of the sport, stressed that this megabuck slugfest could come true primarily because of the amount of money at stake in this dream bout.
"Yes it could happen! Boxers are people and people are boxers and sometimes you get caught up in the position of money, and you got to be able to deal with what's the real power," King said in an interview with Jenna Jay of On The Ropes.
"Dealing with them, you have to deal with real human beings, because the fighters are sophisticated and intelligent and they want what their just due is, so we got to negotiate and compromise," he added.
King stressed that nobody in the business - not even Top Rank's Bob Arum and Golden Boy Promotion's Richard Schaefer - can handle the egos of both fighters and get the job done better than him.
"You got to give them a chance to be respected, that's something you have to be able to deal with, that's why I think I can make any match and make things happen that wouldn't happen without us, cause I consider you as a human being," King said. "I'm very happy that these two guys are looking to be looked upon with such acclaim and such fame."
The alleged megafight between Pacquiao and Mayweather Jr. hit the headlines as of late following a report from 78Sports TV about a "guaranteed" showdown between the two fighters in September. Both camp quickly debunked the rumors, saying they never made an arrangement with each other in the first place.
Pacquiao is set to return in the ring in April with Ruslan Provodnikov and Timothy Bradley emerging as frontrunners for the bout. On the other hand, Mayweather has yet to pick his next foe but Amir Khan and Marcos Maidana are reportedly the candidates for his May 3 event.
