Microsoft has updated its second-generation Surface Pro tablet with a new Intel processor, and it has its perks.

A Surface Pro 2 owner highlighted the processor change on the Microsoft Community forums during a trip to exchange his tablet.

"I returned my Surface Pro 2 (v. 256GB) because of the poor performance after the failed12.10.13 firmware update," wrote GuyGlennon on the Microsoft Community. "I recall the SP2 I returned having a i5 4200U processor. To my surprise, when I checked the System Properties in the Control Panel on my replacement SP2, the processor was upgraded to a i5 4300U @ 1.9[GHz]. - 2.5[GHz]."

The Redmond-based company has confirmed the update.

"Microsoft routinely makes small changes to internal components over the lifetime of a product, based on numerous factors including supply chain partnerships, availability, and value for our customers," a Microsoft spokesperson said, via The Verge. "With any change to hardware or software, we work to ensure that the product experience remains excellent."

The update comes about two months after the launch of the Surface Pro 2 in late October.

"The rationale behind a processor speed bump is unclear, and Microsoft isn't commenting on its decision to improve the Surface Pro 2 components after just two months," noted The Verge's Tom Warren.

"The move may frustrate early adopters whose two-month-old Windows slates are already behind the times, but it's good news for latecomers who'll get more for their money," reported Jon Fingas of Engadget.

Meanwhile, the 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB Surface Pro 2 models are out of stock on the online Microsoft Store. The 512GB model, however, is available for purchase.
