A new "Legend of Zelda" game is heading to the Wii U in 2016.

The news was announced at the Nintendo Direct event along with a short snippet of the game, though more information about the project has not been revealed yet, International Business Times reported.

The clip, which can be watched below, featured "Legend of Zelda" protagonist Link riding a horse in one of Hyrule's open fields, the news outlet wrote. The video indicated that the game will be released next year. Watch it below.

According to Techno Buffalo, the Wii U "Legend of Zelda" is scheduled to come out in the same year that the new NX console from Nintendo will be released. It's highly likely that the new "Legend of Zelda" game will be playable in the NX, or that the console will be equipped with backwards compatibility for Wii U games.

IB Times wrote that if the new "Legend of Zelda" will be released for the Wii U and NX simultaneously, it's possible that the game will serve as a farewell title for the Wii U just like in Gamecube's "Twilight Princess."

"Legend of Zelda' Wii U Map the Size of Kyoto?

Producer Eiji Aonuma recently said the map for "Legend of Zelda" Wii U will be about the size of Kyoto, which is 320 square miles, Gamepur reported. If this turns out to be true, the game's map would be 22x the size of "Skyrim," 10x bigger than "Grand Theft Auto V," and 6x "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt." It's expected that plenty of NPCs and random events could be placed in "Legend of Zelda" Wii U.

However, this size doesn't make the title the largest open world game out there. "Just Cause 2" is at 400 square miles, "Guild Wars: Nightfall" is at 15,000 square miles, and "Test Drive Unlimited" and "Fuel" are at 600 square miles and 5,560 square miles respectively, Gamepur noted.

'Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess' Coming to Wii U

Last week, Nintendo confirmed that the GameCube/Wii crossover title, "Twilight Princess," is coming to Wii U, GameSpot wrote. The game, which is dubbed "Twilight Princess HD," will boast updated graphics and is spearheaded by Australian developer Tantalus.

Aside from the game, there will also be a Wolf Link Amiibo bundled with "Twilight Princess," and will support the other "Legend of Zelda" Amiibo characters from the Smash Bros. list, GameSpot added.

Forbes wrote that "Twilight Princess" went back to the "prior and darker art-style" displayed in "Ocarina of Time" and showcased a "macabre" story and setting. The game is a Wii U exclusive and is set to bow on March 4, 2016 in the West and March 10, 2016 in Japan.
