Leia Organa was one of the best things about the original "Star Wars" trilogy, and for "The Force Awakens", it looks like she's going to be even better.
Director JJ Abrams recently revealed to Entertainment Weekly that Princess Leia will no longer be referred to by that name in the upcoming film. Abrams said, "She's referred to as General. But ... there's a moment in the movie where a character sort of slips and calls her 'Princess.'"
This makes sense considering that she's a high-ranking member of the Rebellion in the original films, and most of the leaks for Episode 7 sees her almost always in a war room.
Abrams added, "The stakes are pretty high in the story for her, so there's not much goofing around where Leia's concerned. But it felt historic to have her, especially with Harrison [Ford], back in scenes together. I can only imagine the baggage that they bring to it, I'm just a fan who loves this stuff, but they've been living with it - and living in it - since '77."
Carrie Fisher, who is reprising her role as the princess - now General - said that her character is now "solitary. Under a lot of pressure. Committed as ever to her cause, but I would imagine feeling somewhat defeated, tired, and pissed." However, she is fine with not being a "princess" any longer. She joked how she would actually want to be called, saying, "People should say, 'Hey! You! My one true joy!'"
Changing Leia's title from princess to general also has an impact on fans around the globe, particularly because for the most part, Leia used to be the only role model for girls in the original trilogy, so fans may have a different take on the new and improved leader. Variety notes, however, that this time around, there are other female characters to root for, including "Game of Thrones" actress Gwendoline Christie's Captain Phasma and Daisy Ridley's Rey.
But while fans are excited to see Fisher back together with Harrison Ford's Han Solo, the actress was more dismissive about it, joking, "I think we're pretty sick of each other by now, so we pretend to be interested in each other between takes. And we fail."
She added, "I'm mostly interested in how he stays in such good shape. I can talk to him about that for a long time."
"Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens" will open in theaters on December 18.
