Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn has been a smash success for Square Enix; the game has managed to overcome many obstacles to become one of the most popular MMO's of 2013. Now, with the previous year in the books and 2014 upon us, Square Enix is preparing a new patch for the game that will add some new content.

Patch 2.2 does not have a specific time frame for launch, according to IGN, but several key new features will be put added along with new content. The key word for the new patch is "Maelstrom," but it is unclear what exactly that means. In any case, the biggest piece of content that is being put into the game is Leviathan, and the massive creator should add some new excitement to the world of Eorzea. In addition to bringing Leviathan to the game, players will also see some new quests added to the game along with new items and recipes that will add new dimensions. The other big piece of content that Patch 2.2 will bring to Final Fantasy 14 is the expansion of the Binding Coil of Bahamut.

While these details are interesting, they do not tell us much about what to expect. With Square Enix likely preparing the game for the PlayStation 4 beta phase that is set to begin on Feb. 22, and the previous patch for the game, Patch 2.1, only introduced in December, users may not have much to play around with until Square Enix gets the PlayStation 4 version of the game up and running.

The original Final Fantasy 14 had one of the worst launches of all time, but A Realm Reborn has managed to fix many of the mistakes that plagued the first incarnation of the series. In fact, the major problem the game had at launch was that is was too popular, and Square Enix had to stop digital sales of the game so that their servers could handle the waves of new users. With the PlayStation 4 version of the game rapidly approaching and Square Enix allowing users to upgrade from the PlayStation 3 to the PlayStation 4 version of the game for free, A Realm Reborn may be one of the top MMO's in 2014.
