The Michigan State Spartans are going for all the glory as they take on the Stanford Cardinal in the 100th edition of the Rose Bowl at 5 p.m EST on Wednesday at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
The Spartans gun for a successful return at the historic Rose Bowl stadium, playing in the most coveted Bowl Game in college football for the first time since 1987.
Michigan State booked its ticket to this year's New Year's Day sporting spectacle following their 34-24 victory over the previously unbeaten Ohio State Buckeyes in the Big Ten Championship game on Dec. 7.
It was a long time coming for Spartans head coach Mark Dantonio, who saw his team lose their Rose Bowl bid to a BCS tiebreaker in 2010 and absorbed a heartbreaking loss to the Wisconsin Badgers in the inaugural Big Ten Championship game in 2011.
"It's going to be a special moment when we walk out on that field," Dantonio told ESPN. "When you set down and write down your goals and think about the goals in whatever job that you take or occupation, you're going to have some different things that you want to try to accomplish. That was one of the things we were trying to accomplish."
Meanwhile, the Cardinal will try to come through with back-to-back victories at the Rose Bowl after cruising to a 20-14 win against the Badgers last year. It marked the first time in 40 years that Stanford won the oldest and most prestigious Bowl Game in college football.
"Our guys have fond memories of it, but they've already started to say it: 'Last year was last year, and we have to prepare this year completely different,'" Cardinal head coach David Shaw told ESPN. "Michigan State has been on a phenomenal run, tough competition, and has come to play every week. We know it's going to be a great game."
