CBS Television Studios has announced that a new "Star Trek" TV series is in the works and it's set to be aired by January 2017. According to the official statement from CBS New York, the series will come with a special preview broadcast and will be available exclusively in the United States via CBS All Access.

However, so far, there is little that we know of the upcoming new series here are some confirmed details so far:

Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote and produced "Star Trek" (2009) and "Star Trek: Into Darkness" (2013) will be serving as executive producer for the new TV series, as it is made in association with his own Secret Hideout banner. Kurtzman is also executive producer to other hit CBS tv series -- "Scorpion" and "Limitless" and will be partnering with Heather Kadin for this project.

Deadline reported that unlike the ongoing film franchise, the series will not feature the classic "Star Trek" characters and will introduce new ones instead. As stated by the network, they are planning on "seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966″.

However, the show is not related to the upcoming "Star Trek Beyond" either, as noted, the original franchise is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2016 and it seems like a good time as any for the company to premiere a new show at the heels of the original franchise.

However, CBS All Access will give the fans of the show access to older episodes that makes the 2017 project different from the rest is the fact that CBS is releasing it directly to it's millions of fans via the streaming service. Marc DeBevoise, Executive Vice President/ General Manager of CBS Digital Media said, "We've experienced terrific growth for CBS All Access, expanding the service across affiliates and devices in a very short time. We now have an incredible opportunity to accelerate this growth with the iconic 'Star Trek,' and its devoted and passionate fan base, as our first original series."

Deadline has also noted that CBS designed to reboot the much-loved sci-fi series as a way to boost the upstart streaming platform of CBS All Access, the same way Sony Pictures TV helped with original programming on its PlayStation Digital Platform.

However, with very few details regarding the new "Star Trek" TV series, fans will have to wait for more news from CBS at a later time.

That being said, are you excited to see a whole new "Star Trek" series, though?
