Michelle Veintimilla plays the first female version of Firefly in Fox's "Gotham." In a conversation with Fox News Latino, the actress said that she's glad of the show's twist of the super villain and how it led to a wider conversation.
"Once it was out that Firefly was going to be a female, I did get a mixed response," Ventimilla told Fox News Latino. "Some people were really excited, and some people were really not excited at all. They were like, 'Firefly is supposed to be a man,' but it was really interesting to experience that. It was really exciting, because I think it's a good thing that some people didn't like it, because it forced people to talk about ... females playing stronger characters."
She continued, "I think it was really empowering for me and I think for other women watching, and young girls especially, and Hispanic girls. I feel like I'm representing the Hispanic community as well."
Ventimilla's role, which has Bridgit Pike as its alter ego, requires the actress to wear an actual flame thrower on her back that spews out real fire, Comicbook.com reported. Bridgit stole materials from her brothers' headquarters and made the costume from scratch.
She also discussed the upcoming episodes of the show, which includes numerous screen times for her character and the future Catwoman, Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova).
According to Ventimilla, the two women met when they were just little girls, but then they separated paths and eventually encountered each other again in the upcoming episodes of "Gotham," Fox News Latino added.
"I think they're both surprised to see where the other has ended up. I'm really taken by her strength and her independence, and I think Selena sees a vulnerability in me and decides to help me out, because she knows that I'm better than that. She knows that I'm stronger than how I am right now, pretty much enslaved to my brothers," she said, as quoted by the news outlet.
Ventimilla added that Selina "marches to the beat of her own drum," but Bridgit reminds her that it's important to have people who care for you and who you can rely to, according to Fox News Latino. She noted that Selina and Bridgit have each other's backs.
Ventimilla said that Selina helped Bridgit to recognize that her brothers are bullies and that there are people like her who suffer injustices, Comicbook.com reported. But when she finally recognizes her strengths, she comes back to her own brothers and ends up being a villain.
"Gotham" airs Mondays on Fox (8/7).
