Microsoft's entry-level Surface Book is getting a cheaper version with NVIDIA graphics.
The latest model comes before the convertible laptop goes on sale starting next week. The device is basically the base model with a Core i5 processor, 128GB of internal storage, and 8GB of RAM, but it comes with a discrete graphic processor unit (dGPU) to provide "more pixel shifting muscle than mere integrated graphics," Tech Radar reported.
The new Surface Book with the dGPU can be purchased for $1,699, which is up $200 for the base version, the news outlet noted. The $1,699 price tag is the same price as the Core i5 Surface Book with 256GB of storage. Interested buyers have to choose between doubling their memory storage and buying a device equipped with a discrete GPU.

Microsoft didn't exactly divulge details about the discrete GPU in the new Surface Book, but Tech Radar wrote that it comes around the same power level as the Nvidia GeForce 940M.
The budget dGPU Surface Book is expected to start shipping on Oct. 26, PC World reported. The $3,200 Surface Book with a 1TB hard drive with dGPU, which appeared on the Microsoft Store a few days earlier, won't ship until late January.
Microsoft Surface Book Specs & Features
Tech Insider described the Surface Book as Microsoft's first ever "high-end laptop" that converts into a tablet. The device has a 13.5-inch PixelSense display that can be detached easily from the keyboard to transform into a light and thin tablet that works well with OneNote and Surface Pen.
The device weighs 3.48 pounds (1,576 grams), and has a dimension of 12.3 inches long, 9.14 inches wide, and 0.51- to 0.9-inches deep. The Surface Book can function up to 12 hours and runs using the latest Windows 10, the news outlet added.
It also has two USB 3.0 ports, a full size SD card reader, Mini DisplayPort, an 8MP primary camera, a 5MP front-facing shooter, front and rear-facing dual microphones, and front-facing stereo speakers with Dolby audio, Tech Insider noted. When converting the device into a tablet, the display has a muscle wire lock so you can undock it safely, or pivot the screen around so it functions like a clipboard.
The Verge wrote that the Surface Book requires two hands to be opened because it's magnetically sealed together so nothing inside would move while it's being carried. This was done to protect the hinge and not because the tablet part might fall off.
