Manny Pacquiao is reportedly scheduled to meet Floyd Mayweather Jr. in January, hoping their one-on-one talk will finally pave the way for the biggest fight in boxing history next year, according to a source close to situation.

Pacquiao, who is scheduled to travel to the United States for a vacation with his family in January, will attempt to book a meeting with Mayweather with the hope of arranging their showdown after several failed negotiations in the past.

The International Business Times reported that Pacquiao is planning to set up a talk with his rival, and he will not represent Bob Arum's Top-Rank Promotions. The Filipino boxing icon is currently locked in a contract with Top Rank until 2014, but he's reportedly contemplating on representing himself as a free agent for this specific bout.

In a recent interview with Manila Bulletin, the 35-year old fighting congressman expressed his desire to take on the universally recognized best boxer in the world at all cost. Pacquiao added that he expected their tussle inside the ring to be entertaining right from the get-go.

"That would be a great fight [with Mayweather], a great match up," said Pacquiao, who's also pitted to fight WBO Welterweight champion Timothy Bradley again after his controversial split decision to the American in 2012.

With No Bob Arum Around, Mega-Showdown Could Really Happen

Almost two weeks ago, Mayweather shot down the possibility of a slugfest with Pacquiao next year, insisting the fight would never happen as long as the Filipino is working for Top-Rank Promotions.

"We all know the Pacquiao fight, at this particular time, will never happen, and the reason why the fight won't happen is because I will never do business with Bob Arum again in life, and Pacquiao is Bob Arum's fighter," Mayweather told FightHype.com.

"Bob Arum gives Pacquiao a date, whereas Floyd Mayweather gives Floyd Mayweather his own date. I will be fighting again in May and I will be fighting again in September," he added.

Now with reports that the Pacman is looking to negotiate with Mayweather by himself, many boxing followers believe things could work out between both camps.

Mayweather hasn't named his next opponent for his May 3 event in MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas. Amir Khan emerged as the early favorite for that fight date but Marcos Maidana and Pacquiao have also put their name in the sweepstakes.
