The music video of Jackie Cruz's cover of Selena Quintanilla's "Como la Flor" was unveiled.
Cruz, known for her role on "Orange is the New Black" as Marisol "Flaca" Gonzalez, was a singer before trying her hand on acting, Billboard reported. The Dominican-American actress' version of "Como la Flor" has an acoustic and intimate take in it.
Watch the music video below. The clip was directed by Sebastian Sdaigui and also featured actor and artist Fernando Garcia, Cruz's real-life boyfriend, the news outlet noted.
Cruz, who said that music is her first love, moved to New York for her music career and released an EP in 2010 titled "Hollywood Gypsy," Billboard wrote. It was also in the city where she auditioned in the Netflix show for the role of Flaca.
"She's one of my biggest idols," said Cruz of the late Quintanilla, as quoted by the news outlet. "And her music still lives on. I picked that song because it just reminds me a lot of a relationship I had in the past and it's something I really connect to. The song is about losing a love and you're still happy for him even though he found happiness with someone else."
The 29-year-old "OITNB" star was recently named as a top millennial role model by Levo, the leading professional network for millenials. The company's list recognizes 100 standout millennials "across all types of industries and categories who exemplify the new meaning of modern day role models, debunk traditional millennial stereotypes, and are building a life and career they are passionate about," Latin Times wrote.
Just recently, Cruz was the featured speaker at Rochester Institute of Technology for the Hispanic Heritage Month. In the event titled "Cruzing through Adversity," she talked about her personal and professional journey.
When she was a teenager, Cruz survived a near fatal car accident that almost paralyzed her, and was homeless for a short while. Last July, she was tapped as a TED Talks speaker and discussed how she overcame adversity, RIT reported.
"I always believed that my next opportunity was it and gave it my all every time. I finally got my first 'yes,' and that 'yes' opened the door to a whole new world. My 'yes' was to play Flaca on 'Orange is the New Black!' Perseverance and passion go hand in hand-never give up," said Cruz, as quoted by RIT.
Aside from these recognitions, Cruz was named as one of The Hollywood Reporter's "Top Latino Powerhouses in Hollywood Under 40" for her work in movies, television, English and Spanish-language musical performances, and advocacy groups, RIT added.
