Guillermo del Toro's gothic fim "Crimson Peak" took a backseat to the nostalgic horror comedy "Goosebumps." According to reports, the film was off to a ghastly start when it opened earlier this week.

As noted by Deadline, the gothic romance was a rare flop, calling it one of the weekend box office's "losers." While the film is rich and visually stunning. with stars Tom Hiddleston and Mia Wasikowska, many hardcore horror movie fans found del Toro's film to be "overindulgent, lavish and even a bit old-fashioned."

The report also said that the film came as a bit of a turnoff to adults who tend to flock theaters for films with great reviews.

A source with Legendary Pictures reported that while "Crimson Peak" hasn't been completely written off as of yet, the numbers are not faring well for the del Toro gothic romance, which is reportedly in the red for at an estimated -$60M.

This is reportedly not taking into account Universal Studio's distribution fee, as well as other global marketing expenses. Domestic box office sales also fell short of expectations raking in $18M-$20M this weekend as well as in the overseas market.

On the other hand, the Jack Black starrer "Goosebumps," the film adaptation of a teen horror genre made famous by author RL Stine, seemed to be doing well. The Rob Letterman film still has a long way to go before it makes money, but Sony has already considered "Goosebumps" a big win after it bagged the studio's fourth No. 1 opening during the past seven weeks.

While the film was a surprise hit to many, it could easily hit the $100 million mark, Deadline added.

Hiddleston, on his part, has opened up on working with del Toro, saying that he enjoyed playing Thomas Sharpe in the film.

"The thing about Guillermo that is less remarked on is his sensitivity and his sincerity. He's incredibly sincere as a filmmaker. If you think about The Devil's Backbone, Pan's Labyrinth, and Crimson Peak-and I do think that those three films fit together in his own mind and are very similar in their tone-there is a childlike innocence or open-heartedness. Guillermo is never glib or cynical or ironic. Everything is fully invested with meaning." he said in an interview.

Fox News Latino reports that this is one of Del Toro's lowest openings ever.
