You probably saw them around book fairs as a child: raised, gooey-looking lettering, spooky or gross books covers, monstrous pets and skeletons --- yes, "Goosebumps."

Although RL Stine's series of children's horror stories came in print only in the 1992 to 1997, it has spawned spinoff books, TV Shows, Games and even a bunch of different merchandise.

The latest is the film starring Jack Black, which took $23.5 million in its first weekend at the box office from 3,501 theaters, easily winning over Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies" and Guillermo Del Toro's gothic romance, "Crimson Peak."

The Hollywood Reporter noted that the edge "Goosebumps" had over the other films is based on the buying power of families. After all, RL Stine's ghosts and ghouls were beloved in the children's horror genre. Being a hybrid family/horror/comedy/young adult film, its response from the audience is helped by the familiarity of the books.

The 3D horror-comedy directed by Rob Letterman stars Jack Black as the RL Stine, and acting alongside him are Dylan Minnette and Odeya Rush.

The story centers about Zach Cooper (Minnette), a teenager who is upset about moving to a small town. However, he finds a silver lining when he finds friends in Champ (Ryan Lee) and a girl named Hannah (Rush), who happens to be the daughter of author RL Stein (Black). Zach then learns that Stine holds a dangerous secret: the monsters in his books are real, and he protects his readers by keeping them locked up in books. Adventures ensue when the creations are unintentionally released from their manuscripts, and it is up to Zach, Hannah, Champ and Stine to put them back in the books to save their town.

Sony's worldwide president of marketing and distribution Josh Greenstein said about the project, "To be No. 1 in such a competitive marketplace is an incredible result. This is the beginning of a franchise."

Despite getting top status, Indie Wire noted that "Goosebumps" and its $23 million is the lowest to take the top spot in films since Labor Day.

Following "Goosebumps" at the box office is "The Martian" with $21.5 million, "Bridge of Spies" with $15.3 million, and "Crimson Peak" with $12.8 million.

"Hotel Transylvania 2" earned $12.2 million this week, with $136.4 total earnings so far. "Pan", however, continued its disappointing roll with $58 million, with a total of only $25.7 million so far.

"Goosebumps" and its collection of ghosts, ghouls, and monsters are still in theaters. Would you be watching your childhood horror series come to life?
