Last year, Eddie Redmayne blew critics and fans with his performance as award-winning physicist Stephen Hawking in "The Theory of Everything". Less than a year later, it looks like he's back in everyone's radar for another Oscar Award-winning, eye-catching role in Tom Hooper's drama, "The Danish Girl".
In this film, We Got This Covered noted that Redmayne is Einar, a brilliant artist who is madly in love with his wife, fellow artist Gerda Wegener (played by Alicia Vikander). While their story may be one for the books, the love story takes a different turn when Einar realizes that he not, in fact, a man. In the 1920s where the story is set, undergoing a sex change is dangerous at best and Einar made history by being one of the first people to attempt such technology for his emotional fulfillment.
In the second trailer for the film, Redmayne's Lili tells Gerda, "He wants to lock me up." The clip then cuts to Gerda talking to a man in an institutional building, "We trusted you. We came to you for help."
This adds intrigue to the film, but the Daily Mail noted that the real artist, who was born as Einar Magnus Andreas Wegener, stopped painting after the reassignment surgery that revealed Lili. Born in 1882, Lili went through four operations from 1930 and severed all ties from her former identity. She then passed away in 1931, three months after her final surgery.
Redmayne spoke about the role, saying that it's his most challenging one yet. He told GQ Magazine, "I was actually offered The Danish Girl before Hawking... People go, 'Oh are you doing this transformative thing?' It's not a concerted choice. I think it will be a unique experience."
"If your dream is to tell stories, interesting stories, play interesting people, then I have been incredibly lucky to portray Stephen and Lil. They are both extraordinary people and as an actor it doesn't get better than that," he added.
Acting alongside Redmayne and Vikander on "The Danish Girl" is Ben Whishaw. The film, directed by "Les Miserables" helmsman Tom Hooper, is inspired by real events, although based on the book by David Ebershoff.
The second official trailer for the film can be watched below. Do you think this has the potential to give Redmayne his second Oscar in a row? Catch the dazzling film, which will hit theaters this November 27, 2015.
