Battlefield 4 has been banned by the Chinese government due to security concerns, causing publisher EA even more grieve over the game. PCgames.com (via ZDnet) is reporting that the government in China banned the game and also bashed EA for the game's theme and creating a game that threatens the security of the entire nation. China's Ministry of Culture has forbidden people in the country from downloading the game as well as demos and patches for the game.
The controversy stems from the fact that the main conflict in game involves the United States fighting China in an epic war in 2020. The game's plot also involves the current Chinese government being overthrown, which may also draw the ire of the current government. The ban on the game was just a matter of time after a state-run newspaper, China Military, claimed that EA was trying to smear the image of the nation with Battlefield 4.
Attempts to censor the game in China have so far proved to be somewhat successful. On Weibo.com, China's biggest social media website, the game is banned from being mentioned under it's translated name of "ZhanDi4." However, users are still able to trade the game on peer-to-peer networks under the game's English name as well as the abbreviation BF4. However, EA cannot sell the game in the country, so the company cannot profit at all from the game in China.
Battlefield 4 has suffered from several different setbacks since it was first launched in October. The game has had a huge amount of bugs and glitches show up post-launch, and some users have reported that the game is almost unplayable at certain points due to the bugs that have appeared. These bugs have continued even though EA has delayed every other game currently being worked on by developer DICE so that all of the company's resources can be used to fix the game. However, more bugs have appeared after DLC for the game was released, causing further headaches for EA.
The game is so bug filled that two separate lawsuits have been filed against EA over the claim that the publisher lied to investors about the state of the game and insiders were able to sell their shares at an inflated rate because of this. It will be able to see if the series is able to recover from these blows and if Battlefield 4 can become the game that fans and critics believe it can be.
