The 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics qualifiers will resume Friday as members of Team USA vie for spots in the highly-anticipated event through the U.S. Olympic Trials.
Speedskating And Women's Hockey
After a month-long break -- aside from the Women's Hockey event -- the U.S. Olympic Trials will resume on Friday at 8 p.m EST, featuring athletes who will vie for slots in the Men's 5000m and Women's 3000m speedskating at the Olympic Oval in Utah.
Action will continue on Saturday for the men's and women's 500m trials at 3 p.m EST, which will be followed by the Women's Hockey match between USA and Canada at 4 p.m EST, as reported by NBC Sports.
The men and women's 1000m and 1500m trial will be on Sunday and Tuesday, respectively, while the men's 10000m and women's 5000m will be held on Wednesday.
The talented speedskating teams, who are expected to have a rich medal haul in Sochi next year, will need to go through the trials this year unlike before in which the top skaters were automatically given a spot in the roster based on their World Cup performances.
Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined
Meanwhile, the highly-anticipated Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined trials will be on Sunday, and it is expected to be the most viewed Olympic trial events.
All eyes will be on the women's ski jumping event as it is a new event in the Olympic trials. The International Olympic Committee added the women's ski jumping event to its Winter Olympics calendar in 2011.
The event's biggest attraction -- Sarah Hendrickson -- will not compete on Sunday as she is still recovering from ACL, MCL, and meniscus tears in her right knee after a devastating crash in August.
The 19-year-old Hendrickson, who ruled nine of 13 World Cup events last year, is still expected to get a spot on the roster. The remaining three spots are expected to be contested by Jessica Jerome, Lindsey Van, Abby Hughes, and Alissa Johnson.
While the U.S. Nordic combined team did not produce good results in the previous Winter Olympic Games, the upcoming trial is expected to get a lot of attention as well. Brothers Bryan and Taylor Fletcher are poised to take the spotlight along with 2010 Olympic champion Bill Demong.
