Hall of Fame trainer Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain believes that Juan Manuel Marquez will defeat Timothy Bradley if the two fighters decide to square off once again in 2014.
Beristain told Boxingscene that his fighter, Marquez, is capable of beating up Bradley if the undefeated American is man enough to stand toe-to-toe with the Mexican boxing icon instead of running like he did during their first showdown.
Marquez, who was coming off a scintillating sixth-round knockout win over Manny Pacquiao before the Bradley bout, absorbed a split-decision loss to the reigning WBO welterweight champion in their title showdown in May.
Despite being clearly dominated by Bradley, both Marquez and Beristain had a familiar tone after the fight as they insisted that the judges robbed the 40-year-old Mexican once again.
"Juan Manuel can beat him, [if Bradley] exchanges. Juan can punch and beat him, but if Bradley runs like he did the last time, then Marquez can't win if the judges do what they did the last time," Beristain said.
The world-renowned trainer also added that Marquez should consider ending his storied professional boxing career soon. Beristain said that he would tell Marquez to fight two more times after the Bradley bout and then hang up his gloves for good.
"If he wins [over Bradley], I would like to see him fight two more times and then that's it. I have always said that I'll follow Juan Manuel to hell. I can only advise him and then he makes the decisions, but he always listen to me and we've always had good results," Beristain said.
Promoter Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions recently said that Marquez will fight twice in 2014.
Bradley is on top of their list but if they will not get an immediate rematch with Bradley, who is also reportedly being eyed by Manny Pacquiao for his next fight in April, the Mexican warrior will go up against a worthy opponent in a fight that will be staged in Mexico City.
"We are in contact. He is looking for a rematch with Bradley and we are intending to do a fight in Mexico. The Mexican fans deserve the opportunity to see him. The fight in Mexico would happen before the rematch with Bradley. We do not have anyone specific [in mind for the opponent], but we are sure it will be a highly rated opponent," Beltran said in a statement via Boxingscene.
Marquez is also being linked to reigning WBO light welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov, but the Mexico City native previously rejected the idea of facing the Russian champion.
