Saturn Award Winners: 'The Avengers' Tops Genre Awards; 'Skyfall' and 'Life of Pi' Also Win Big

"The Avengers" and "Skyfall" topped the 2013 Saturn Awards.

The awards, handed out by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror films, recognize the best in genre films. During the ceremony the Academy president Robert Holguin stated, "From zombies and super-heroes to some of the best science-fiction stories ever created and the most awesome images of fantasy ever seen, this was a truly phenomenal year for genre entertainment, which is now the very heart of the entire entertainment industry. The Academy of Science Fiction, Horror & Fantasy Films is truly delighted to be able to honor such fine achievements."

"The Avengers" went home with four awards; more than any other nominated film. It won Best Science Fiction Film, Best Direction for Joss Wheedon, Best Supporting Actor for Jason Clark, and Best Special Effects. Whedon also took home an award for "The Cabin in The Woods" for Best Horror Movie.

Meanwhile "Skyfall" won one award for Best Action/Adventure Film. The James Bond movie was predicted to sweep the awards ceremony but failed to garner awards for Best Actor for Daniel Craig, Best Supporting Actor for Javier Bardem or Best Supporting Actress Judi Dench.

"Life of Pi" went home with two awards including Best Fantasy Film and Best Breakthrough performance for Suraj Sharma.

Matthew McConaughey won Best Actor for his role in "Killer Joe" while Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence topped the Best Actress award for her role in "The Hunger Games." Meanwhile Anne Hathaway took home the only award for "The Dark Knight Rises." Hathaway won Best Supporting Actress for her turn as Selena Kyle/Catwoman.

"Killer Joe" also won Best Independent Film while "Frankenweenie" took home Best Animated Film and Best Score for Danny Elfman.

The Wachowski Siblings' latest film "Cloud Atlas" also garnered two awards. The film won Best Editing and Make Up. Other films that garnered accolades included "Les Miserables," "Django Unchained," and "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey."

The Saturn Awards were handed out on June 26th in Burbank California. The awards celebrated their 39th year and also paid tribute to Richard Matheson who passed away on June 23.
