Halloween is almost upon us and stars are already gearing up with their costumes. Unfortunately for "Pretty Little Liars" actress Ashley Benson, her fans aren't quite happy with her choice outfit.
Benson posted on Instagram a photo of herself wearing a Cecil the Lion costume, which she originally captioned, ""Help! Can't decide on my Halloween costume this year! What do you guys think of this cecil the lion costume?"
Later on, she edited it to read simply as a "lion costume" instead.
The outfit was brought by the star from a website called Yandy and served as the company's attempt at turning the costume into a charity initiative. The company's site explained, "20% of the proceeds of our limited-edition, Cecil the Lion costume will be given to a Global Conservation Organization to support global conservation initiatives."
For her part, Benson apologized following the backlash, explaining in a separate post that her initial photo was "in poor taste". However, she went on to explain that it was her management who posted the photo, saying, "The caption that was posted was incorrect and my costume was not Cecil the Lion, when I saw that, I contacted management who handled the post and had it immediately changed. I recognize that I am responsible for everything posted on my social accounts and this was an unfortunate oversight."
To amend for the said oversight, the actress said that she will give the money she earned for promoting the costume to the World Wildlife Fund for Nature. She ended her post by saying, "I am a supporter of Animal conservation and I will be donating all the proceeds of this deal to the World Wildlife Fund. I love you all and I apologize if I let you down."
According to The Daily Mail, Benson was telling the truth about her costume being a generic one which Yandy named as a "Deluxe Lion Costume". However, they do have a skimpier version, which was the one that they titled "Cecil the Lion Costume".
Despite the backlash that Benson and Yandy got for the distasteful outfit, it is not the first time that a company attempted to capitalize on the poaching of the said lion. TMZ reported that earlier in the year, Costumeish.com already started advertising a Dr. Walter Palmer costume, which comes with a lion head to carry around. The cite's CEO, Jonathan Weeks, claimed that the costume was created due to public demand.
What do you think about these types of Halloween outfits?
