Whovians rejoice: there is a new "Doctor Who" series in the works at BBC 3, and it's for the younger generation to appreciate as well!
In a report by Entertainment Weekly, the "Doctor Who" spin-off is going to be titled "Class" and is a series set for younger adults and will take place in contemporary London. It will also feature Coal Hill School, which has been a key location in the long-running series.
The BBC press release read: "With all the action, heart and adrenaline of the best YA fiction (Buffy, Hunger Games), this is Coal Hill School and Doctor Who like you've never seen it before."
Acclaimed author Patrick Ness will be executive producing the series. Ness is known for his works, "A Monster Calls" and YA Series "Chaos Walking". This will be his first television series, which he was thrilled to be part of. "I'm astounded and thrilled to be entering the Doctor Who universe, which is as vast as time and space itself. There's so much room there for all kinds of amazing stories, and to work with Steven Moffat and Brian Minchin to find a place to tell one of my own has been an absolute joy," Ness said.
Steven Moffat, who is lead writer and executive producer of 2005 "Doctor Who" series, will also be an executive producer on "Class. Moffat shared about the project: "No one has documented the dark and exhilarating world of the teenager like Patrick Ness, and now we're bringing his brilliant storytelling into Doctor Who. This is growing up in modern Britain -- but with monsters!"
Variety reported that "Class" was commissioned by BBC Three controller Damian Kavanagh, and BBC Drama Commissioning controller Polly Hill. The series is going to be produced by BBC Cymru Wales in association with BBC Worldwide for BBC Three.
Kavanagh said about the Ness's involvement: "We're excited to give Patrick Ness this opportunity to work with us at BBC Three and the 'Doctor Who' family. Patrick understands young audiences and I'm delighted he will use his incredible skills as a storyteller to delight audiences on BBC Three. BBC Three will always innovate and offer opportunities for brilliant new talent."
"I am thrilled that Patrick Ness is writing his first drama series for BBC Three. The combination of Patrick and Steven Moffat is an exciting partnership that has created a brilliant Doctor Who spin-off for our BBC Three audience," Hill also added.
